What is a sworn translation?

The purpose of a SWORN TRANSLATION is to give legal value to the translation of a document or certificate.

In Italy, this procedure is carried out by a sworn translator who personally goes to court, to a lay magistrate  (or justice of the peace) or to a notary’s office.

How to give legal value to a translation?

After translating the document or certificate, the translator will personally provide this service before a public official following a precise procedure.

As already said, In Italy this procedure is carried out by a sworn translator who personally goes to court, to a lay magistrate  (or justice of the peace) or to a notary’s office.

Which documents need a sworn translation?

The most common documents that need a sworn translation in order to be legally valid in Italy include birth, marriage or divorce certificates or also driving licences, vehicle registration certificates, criminal records or citizenship application documents, as well as several notarial acts.

When a translation needs to be legally valid in Italy, the only possible procedure is trough a sworn translation.

If, on the other hand, the translation needs to be sent abroad, there are several ways:

  • For some documents and/or countries it is necessary to legalise the sworn translation by legalisation or by affixing an Apostille;

  • in other cases, a certified translation is required.
